As compared to reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete has some significant advantages:

The elements can be designed so as not to crack:

  • Increase in durability
  • No corrosion of passive steels
  • Larger Inertias (less deformable elements)
  • Higher shear resistance

Higher thickness/span ratio:

  • Reinforced concrete slabs: L/25-L/30
  • Pre-stressed concrete slabs: L/35-L/45

Savings

  • Reduced amount of concrete
  • Reduced actual weight, and thus foundation expenses

Aesthetics

  • Flot slabs without beams
  • Thinner and slender structures

Ecology

  • Reduced consumption of matter
  • Less C02
